Kick off in Sydney itself if you're starting there. Bondi Beach for that classic Aussie surf scene, coastal walk to Bronte or Coogee, grab fish and chips, feel the ocean energy right away. The city vibes are a great launchpad.

Head north to the Central Coast or straight to Port Macquarie. Koala Hospital here is a highlight, see rescued koalas up close, super cute and a bit heartbreaking. Beaches are quieter than Sydney's, good for a relaxed swim.

Then the big one: Byron Bay. Iconic surf town with that hippie-chill atmosphere, Cape Byron Lighthouse walk for panoramic views, dolphins often in the bay. The beaches are stunning, and the hinterland has cool markets and cafes. Great spot to slow down for a day or two.

Keep going to Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise for the high-rises and busy vibe, but head to Burleigh Heads or Currumbin for better beaches and national park walks. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is awesome for holding koalas, feeding kangaroos, and seeing birds up close.

Brisbane next if you want city time, South Bank for river views, markets, or just a breather. But the real gems are around it, like Moreton Island for sand dunes and snorkeling, or Stradbroke Island for wilder beaches and koalas in the wild.

North of Brisbane hits the Sunshine Coast. Noosa stands out, national park with coastal trails, koalas in the trees, and calm beaches perfect for kayaking or just chilling. Everglades boat tours are magical too, mangroves and wildlife everywhere.

Then the real magic starts with the Fraser Island (K'gari) detour. World's largest sand island, 4WD needed, but worth it for Lake McKenzie's turquoise water, dingoes on the beach, rainforests, and endless dunes. Multi-day camping or day tours from Hervey Bay.

Back on the mainland, Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays. Whitehaven Beach is unreal, pure white silica sand and swirling turquoise water. Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef from here, or sail around the islands, it's bucket-list stuff.

Further north, Townsville has good reefs nearby, but push to Mission Beach for cassowaries (those big dangerous birds), beautiful beaches, and jungle vibes. Dunk Island nearby for day trips.

Then Cairns area. The city itself is a hub, but the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation are musts. Mossman Gorge for swimming in crystal rivers, boardwalks through ancient rainforest, crocs in the wild (from a safe distance), and the meeting of reef and rainforest at Cape Trib. Snorkel or dive the Outer Great Barrier Reef from Cairns or Port Douglas.

If you have extra time, Atherton Tablelands inland detour for waterfalls like Millaa Millaa circuit, crater lakes, and platypus spotting.

These stops give you that perfect mix: urban starts, surf towns, wildlife close-ups (koalas, kangaroos, cassowaries, crocs, reef fish), national parks with hikes, and beaches that go from crowded to deserted. The drive takes 10-21 days realistically, depending how much you linger. Roads are mostly good highways, but watch for road trains, wildlife at dusk, and cyclones in wet season (Nov-Apr).

Bring bug spray, sunscreen, good walking shoes, and respect the animals (don't feed wild ones). The East Coast throws everything at you, from city lights to ancient forests to underwater worlds.
